V.O.W N°30 (25 - 31 July 2011)
How do we perceive what we see?  How can someone explain the multifaceted and intricate relationship produced between the creator and the viewer?  Is what we see a conceptual state of mind?  Montreal-based, Baillat Cardell & fils created the video content and lighting design you are about to see for the video screens of the Grand Foyer Culturel de la Place des Arts in Montreall; The videos were produced in collaboration with illustrators Capucine Labarthe and Lino.  With Montreal being appointed UNESCO City of Design, the metropolis is very familiar in promoting the significance of design space in order to craft a source of well-being and respect from one another.   In this context, a conceptual state of mind is formulated by the 35 video installation screens as the spectators of Grand Foyer Culturel de la Place des Arts in Montreal pass by; explore the complex relationship produced between creators and viewers on themes related to performing arts.
L’inspiration,” the first concept captures a metaphoric manner in the inspirational process of those who engage in creative projects, while “Le public,” the second concept has produced playful characters exemplifying a range of emotions felt by the spectator as it captures the metaphoric process of those who are inspired. With the participation of Stéphane Poirier and the linguist Steve Savage, the design firm recently decided to produce a third video, “La critique”, illustrating in a lyrical approach the concept of criticism.

The audio tracks accompanying the video are composed by Jean-Sébastien RouxPheek (Archipel) and Sul.A(Archipel).  They complete the visuals in an unsurpassed manner, as spectators immerse their mind and their soul in an evolutive environment of blissfulness and enjoyment to a dramatic state by concentrating to the whole or just on some parts - a very theatrical and unique experience!   Enjoy V.O.W. #30 today @Yatzer.com!

Law Street House by Muir Mendes
A drawbridge-like flap lowers from the steel-plated facade of this Melbourne bunker to reveal a bedroom window.

Australian architects Muir Mendes designed Law Street House for themselves.

The building occupies the site of a former workman’s cottage and is flanked on three sides by other houses.

Designed to be termite-proof, the house features a steel structure plus steel doors, window frames and joinery, as well as a tallow wood floor that is unpalatable to the bugs.

A bedroom, living area and bathroom occupy the ground floor of the two-storey property, while a study, second bedroom and second bathroom are located on the first floor.

A double-height corridor crosses the house and is naturally lit by a skylight.

Law Street House is the fourth Australian house to be featured on Dezeen this month, after a cliff-top home anda glass-roofed residence in Sydney, and a cantilevered house in Melbourne – see all our stories about Australia here.

Here’s more information from the architects:

Law Street House
Located in a tight single lane street in South Melbourne the original dilapidated one bedroom workman’s cottage built in the 1880s formed the initial brief for architect’s/owner builders Bruno Mendes and Amy Muir.  To pursue the desire to construct using ones own hands formed a very important part of the brief.
Joe Mendes who manages steel fabrication for a large construction company formed the final link.  The following 3 and a half years of demolition, excavation and construction would be referred to as ‘the daddy Mendes apprenticeship’.

French studio Cut Architectures tore down a suspended ceiling and stripped away wallpaper from the former shop to reveal bare walls and original mouldings.
Visitors to Café Coutume are served drinks from conical flasks and can choose pastries from a white tiled display cabinet.

Fluorescent tubes hang vertically from the ceiling behind low-energy Plumen bulbs, which won the Brit Insurance Design of the Year Award 2011 earlier this year

The blend of tradition, alchemy and technique inspired CUT architectures design.

Rethink.

My C.V has been refined once again, Im slowly getting there, however Im not sure if Im over thinking but choosing just a few pages to show which sums up my work, ethos, and style is proving difficult!

Im versatile and want to show that but how do I escape having endless pages of examples to forward!!

HELP!

Coultard Gallery London,

An impromptu visit to Somerset house, due to the rain and a lack of tube transport, turned to be a great option. While the pieces on display were of course fine examples of some of the worlds best known works, It was the Ceiling detail that caught my attention as I made my way around.

time for travels?

GO!

make or break?

Taking a little time out from the stress of organising everything for the upcoming free range show, I decided to construct this great graduation present from my friend nina and her family,
It was a little daunting at first when nothing looked as i expected, however it was definitely not as difficult as it looked and the Sarah the dinosaur was up in no time!

First impressions

They arrived, hopefully they make a good first impression!

Monday

keeping up,

Ive been trying to keep up to date with the ever changing neon signage situated in Wakefield, however studying in Newcastle and having not returned to the area for a good few months now, Im most certain ive managed to miss a few new exclamations of love,

Here is the most resent of what is to become a Guerilla Art installation, (it appears that the correct planning permission was not gained before this series of signs were erected). Despite Im glad this the installation still stands with this months phrase.

homecoming.

After finally fitting two rooms in to one, I am back in the family home, the whole moving process was a little daunting as I have not lived with my Parents home for  3 years now, however until I have some firm grounding on the job front its where I  will be residing,
Apart from having your washing done and other little perks of home life, Im glad ill be able to spend alot more time with some of the people Ive missed,
As the years have passed Ive realised the true friends stick around, and that has been a brilliant apocalypse!

One of these great people is my long suffering friend Nina, she was 1st to call and arrange a long awaited catch up,

After a spot of dinner we spent a sunny evening geeking out at the vintage car show,
Nina transformed into Sir Cliff Richard upon discovering this bus, however she was a little disappointed that the only summer holiday on offer was to Pontefract the town famous for its liquorice production.
